Further Study - PETS
The Post-Entry Training (PET) Scheme offers funding to non-academic and support staff, encouraging them to undertake courses of further study and training. The Scheme supports programmes of study leading to recognised qualifications which equip staff primarily to improve work performance or lead to personal development.
Chosen courses must be relevant to a member of staff's current post. Decisions on funding and support are made by the Post-Entry Training Committee, the members of which consider applications submitted to the Scheme. Members of staff on academic grades are currently not eligible to apply to PETS and are requested to discuss funding opportunities for further study with their head of school/section.
The Scheme also currently supports the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). To gain a place on this programme, staff must complete the relevant PETS application form.
There are two deadlines for the Scheme:
- Round 1: programmes starting between September and December - application deadline is third Friday of the previous May
- Round 2: programmes starting between January and May - application deadline is last Friday of the previous October
Deadlines for 2012/13 are:
- Round 1 – 18 May 2012 - currently accepting applications
Round 2 – 26 October 2012 - currently accepting applications
PETS does not provide retrospective funding so if you have missed the relevant deadline for the start of your programme of study, you will need to wait to apply to the next appropriate deadline or seek alternative funding.
In summary;
- All non-teaching staff within the University are eligible to apply to PETS. Teaching staff should apply directly to their HoS
- Part-time staff can apply to the Scheme as can temporary staff providing the duration of their contract exceeds the duration of the chosen programme of study by a minimum of 6 months
- The maximum funding available from PETS is 75% but applicants can also be awarded 50%, 25% or zero funding
- Programmes of study must be relevant to the applicant’s current job role
- Applications must be supported by their line manager and Head of School or Director of Division
- Applications should be signed and a hard copy submitted to: Anne Jackson, HRD, L209, Allerton Building. Please also submit an electronic copy, with or without authorizing signatures to; HR-PETS-Enquiries@salford.ac.uk
- Applications cannot be accepted after the relevant deadline. This is in order to ensure equity and fairness
For more detailed information, please read PETS - Guidance Notes for Applicants. If you have any queries about the Scheme, please do not hesitate to contact the Scheme Manager at HR-PETS-Enquiries@salford.ac.uk
Please note that the Scheme does not offer a list of available courses. It is expected that applicants should have a good idea of the subject they wish to study and research availability at local institutions accordingly. However, if you are unsure what areas of study would be suitably relevant to your role, generic advice is available from HRD if needed.
To arrange to speak to someone in HRD about your options, please contact the HRD Team.
