Developing and Sharing Practice
Retention Good Practice Guide
Changes that are taking place in the higher education sector, in particular HEFCE’s controls on student numbers and the new funding regime that will come into effect in September 2012, mean that retaining students for the duration of their programme is a strategic priority for the University of Salford. The University’s Learning and Teaching Strategy (2012-17) aims to achieve a 90% continuation rate for full-time undergraduate entrants by 2017. That is, 90% of full-time level 4 students are still studying with us the following academic year.
One of the aims of the Learning and Teaching Strategy is to share excellence in practice with the wider University so that colleagues may benefit from others’ experiences and ideas. This report contains examples of activities that have taken place at the University of Salford over the last few years which are believed to have enhanced the student experience and contributed to improved continuation and progression rates. Teaching quality good practice at the University of Salford
Programme teams that scored 90 percent or more for teaching quality in the 2011 National Student Survey were invited to outline what factors and practices they believe contributed to these outstanding scores. We received a tremendous response and our thanks go to the programme leaders and teams who wrote to tell us about their success stories.
The good practice which colleagues highlighted have been grouped into six key themes:
1. Innovative learning and teaching
2. Student focused approach
3. Use of technology
4. Employability
5. Research informed teaching and learning
6. The role of teaching teams
We hope staff will refer to this invaluable resource in reflecting on their own practice and will take the opportunity to find out more from the programme teams themselves.
