Induction

As a new staff member, to help you settle in to the University, we have created the ‘Welcome to US’ induction programme that has been designed to complement the local induction process that you receive through your school/professional service area outlined in the Code of Practice for Induction of New Staff.

Whilst you may have already been here a few weeks or even months, this programme enables you to find out more about the key goals of the University, meet other new colleagues and increase your awareness of activities and services available within the University community. We hope you will find engaging with this programme useful. Our aim is for new staff to attend the 'Welcome to US' session within six months of starting in their post.

Induction Activities

The table below outlines the induction activities, who is required to attend/complete each activity and provides booking/access information.

Please note:

Participation in the induction programme counts as part of your probationary requirements, therefore you should attend/complete the required elements of the induction programme within your probationary period – this is detailed on your Contract of Employment and offer letter. It is your responsibility to register your attendance at each session (even if you arrive late) so that it can be recorded. Please see details of the probationary requirements on the HR web site.

As a new member of staff, we would also like to draw your attention to the following:

  • Mentoring support: it is recommended that all staff are provided with a mentor during their probationary period to help them settle into the University. A copy of the University’s Mentoring Guidelines is available on the HR web site. Please discuss the arrangements for providing you with a mentor with your line manager.
  • Academic Practice: for staff who are new to teaching and do not already hold a teaching or equivalent qualification, it is also a University requirement that you undertake the University’s Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. For more information about the programme, please visit the Learning Development Unit web site.
