Safety - Health and Safety Advisory Group

Why do we require a Health and Safety Advisory Group?

The Health and Safety Advisory Group assists the Executive Committee in meeting their management responsibilities by providing advice and making recommendations.

It is the principle forum across the University for communication and discussion on significant safety, health and wellbeing matters and initiatives. This is important as:

The Law requires all employers to consult with their employees:

  • The Safety Representatives and Health and Safety Advisory Group’s Regulations.
  • The Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations.

It motivates and helps staff be aware of health and safety issues which allows for:

  • More efficient Health and Safety Management.
  • Less accidents and work related illness.

The Advisory Group monitors the extent of University compliance to health and safety requirements and makes recommendations to rectify areas of non-compliance.

How do we ensure the Advisory Group representatives are able to carry out their role?

  1. Through appointing appropriately qualified individuals.
  2. By providing support and training where required i.e.:
    • Trade Unions provide safety representative training.
    • The British Safety Council provides an accredited Certificate in Supervising Staff Safety.

Membership of the Health and Safety Advisory Group

  • 5 Management Members
  • 8 Employee Representatives
  • 1 Student Representative
  • Chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Secretary
