What is this resource for?
This resource is provided to enable Health and Safety coordinators to fulfil their commitment to providing health and safety support in their own School or Professional Service.
It provides information about the role and links to the important documents that will assist in discharging their responsibilities.
Who is it aimed at?
This resource is aimed at both new and existing Health and Safety Coordinators. It can be used as an introduction to the key elements of the role; or as a reminder of practical aspects of being a Health and Safety Coordinator.
Overview of the Role
The role of the Health and Safety Coordinator is principally to provide support and advice within their School or Professional Service.
The main requirements are detailed in the main University Health and Safety Policy. These are:
Health and Safety Coordinators are appointed by the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of College or Director of Professional Service to advise them on all aspects of health and safety.
Specifically, they will:
- Provide advice to Pro Vice-Chancellors and Deans of Colleges, Directors of Professional Services, Heads of School, and Line Managers in relation to undertaking risk assessments
- Develop the Code of Practice for Management of Health and Safety for the School or Division;
- Maintain accurate records of accidents and investigate all accidents and near miss/non injury accidents to determine the cause and provide advice to prevent recurrence;
- Maintain records of copies of risk assessments for the School or Service for 5 years from completion of the work. Where long term health effects may arise, records must be transferred to Health, Safety and Wellbeing for keeping.
- Participate in training to develop their skills and maintain their competence;
- Maintain records of qualification or competency certificates held by staff, where these are required by legislation or University requirements;
- Provide the necessary training within their School or Service to enable Pro Vice-Chancellors and Deans of Colleges, Directors of Professional Services, Heads of School and Line Managers to undertake their health and safety duties;
- Maintain accurate safety records in preparation for and participate in the annual audit of health and safety compliance for their school or division, including findings of mini inspections and corrective actions;
- Monitor safe working practices within the school or division;
- Seek advice from Health, Safety and Wellbeing where there is a lack of understanding in respect of health and safety.
